We will serve businesses, caregivers, seniors and agencies providing services to seniors. This vision will help identify strategic issues to guide strategy selection and implementation.

PROGRAMS TO-DATE

CONSUMER FRAUD PREVENTION FOR SENIORS

Consumer fraud is a serious crime. It can be financially harmful and sometimes devastating, especially when committed against seniors; many of whom are considered most vulnerable. It’s estimated that five-million cases of elder financial exploitation occur annually.

In keeping with its mission to empower individuals to age with independence and dignity, ElderSource in Action, presented the following program on WJCT to inform seniors on how to BE AWARE, BE ALERT AND BE SAFE. It was aired during May 2010 which was designated “Older Americans Month”.

We addressed the critical issues involved in fraud and exploitation especially when targeted for people aged sixty and over.

Our focus was on four consumer fraud categories:

TRAVEL TRAINING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH JTA

A collaborative effort between Jacksonville Transit Authority (JTA) and ElderSource In Action, Inc. to assist anyone in learning to travel independently and safely. This program helps individuals develop the confidence and skills to use all transit options by teaching them to ride buses, Community Shuttles and the Skyway.

This is a no-cost, self paced training program that offers one-on-one or group training. The program is for those who wish to travel independently using the fixed and or flexed route transit system. The goal of Travel Training is to improve lives by assisting individuals in traveling on public transit successfully and safely.

A broad range of programs, services and information is offered to meet each individual’s needs. Everyone is eligible to receive travel training.

PEDESTRIAN GRANT

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, through the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, selected ElderSource in Action as a demonstration site for the Pedestrian Safety Workshop: A Focus on Older Adults.

Over the course of the year-long project, our organization will conduct four workshops to bring attention to pedestrian issues for older adults.

Our first workshop was held on November 4th at the Jim Fortuna Senior Center.
